Association between Locus of Control and Self-concept in Patients with End-stage Renal Disease

PURPOSE: This study was designed to determine association between locus of control and self concept in ESRD patients. METHODS: Fifty patients with ESRD under hemodiyalysis regimen compared with 50 matched-controls for locus of controls by the Iranian version of the Health Locus of Control Scale and self concept by Roger's Self-Concept questionnaire. Data were analyzed by Chi-square and Fisher's exact tests. RESULTS: Distribution of positive self-concept was 58% in controls whereas 32% in patients (P<0.05). Another significant difference was observed in subjects according to their locus of control. While distribution of internal locus of control in controls was 68%, it was 54% in patients (P<0.05). There was not any significant association between self-concept and locus of control in patients (P>0.05). CONCLUSIONS: We suggested lower positivity of self-concept and locus of control in ESRD patients.
